This December, the NIH’s National Center for Advancing Translational Sciences (NCATS), the ITM’s parent organization, celebrates five years of translational science innovation. From pre-clinical innovation to patient engagement, NCATS has achieved many successes across the translational science spectrum. Some of the past five years’ landmarks include:
- Translating laboratory research into better hearing for cochlear implant patients (learn more about the research of one of our ITM researchers who also works with cochlear implant patients here!)
- The development of a drug repurposing test that identified 53 drugs that may block Ebola infection (read about the ITM researchers who are also repurposing drugs to treat other diseases here!)
- The discovery of the first viable treatment for a rare lung disease called lymphangioleiomyomatosis (LAM), which previously had no existing treatment options.
- Launching a platform that discovers treatments for rare diseases, which has developed 200 rare disease models on which to test potential therapies, and validating 12 repurposed drugs to help patients with several rare diseases.
