Sam Volchenboum, MD, PhD, ITM Associate Director and Director of ITM partner the Center for Research Informatics (CRI), recently published a letter on “contagious risk” in the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA). His work focuses on the effects in-hospital critical illness events have on other patients in the same ward – also know as contagious risk.
Major critical illness events, such as cardiopulmonary arrest and intensive care unit (ICU) transfer, disrupt workflow in a hospital ward. Other patients on the same ward may receive inadequate attention, especially if their care team is distracted by the emergency.
