The International Society for Optics and Photonics (SPIE) honored ITM-UChicago researcher Maryellen Giger, PhD, with its 2021 Directors’ Award.
Giger, the A.N. Pritzker Professor of Radiology and leader of the ITM’s Radiomics Core, has conducted groundbreaking research in diagnosing breast, lung, and prostate cancers, and has extended her expertise in imaging research to include analysis of COVID-19 patients. Giger is also committed to health equity and inclusivity.
“She has authored papers through SPIE since 1990 and has been an active Society member for 25 years,” said SPIE Past-President Jim Oschmann. “She has been a key voice in data-driven approaches in terms of how we serve our community, and an active leader in pushing forward our equity, diversity, and inclusion efforts. In addition, she is an active mentor and trusted colleague who is always looking to help others in her profession.”
